Chapter 7

Like the day prior Lyev worked quickly. When Isis came into his apartment and undressed, he helped her lay across his couch as she had before. He took out his sketchbook and referred to his drawings as he sat down to begin the painting. He had no intention of finishing the job completely. All it would take him was a good day of working to get the job done, but he wanted to draw the project out for as long as he could.

Isis watched him paint, and she chatted about the meal she had cooked. "What was your favorite meal at home?"

Lyev smiled as he fought a touch of homesickness. He had been in America for over a month, and he missed his last apartment in Moscow. He had lived simply in a one bedroom in the heart of the city. The rent was extravagant, and the view was humbling. Briefly, he had lived decently. That was behind him now, however. He was content to play the struggling artist. "My mother used to make pelmeni."

"What is that?"

"How do I explain? It's meat—you know, like pork or lamb—any kind of meat, wrapped in dough and boiled. Very good stuff. In Russia we eat mostly stews, soups, things like that."

They wrapped up the session a while later, and Isis eagerly asked him if he was hungry yet. "Come on. It's a short drive," she said. She led him down the stairs of H3, hoping neither her brother nor her mother happened to see her with the man. She didn't want to have to explain what was going on between her and the sexy stranger—not that anything was going on, Isis reasoned. The man was just painting a picture for her.

Lyev loped beside her with long strides and a sureness to his step. He was no longer uncomfortable when he walked the city streets, though he still didn't quite fit in. He waved to a woman in passing as he followed Isis around the corner to her car. They drove a short distance across the city to a different apartment complex, which Lyev noticed was a step above H3. He nodded, impressed when Isis opened the door to her clean, well-decorated placet. "Very nice," he said.

Isis smiled. Delicious food smells emanated from the kitchen. Linelle had done as she'd asked and started rewarming the meal. "I want you to meet my roommate, Lyev. Nelly?"

Nelly stepped out of her bedroom in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt a few sizes too small. "Hey," she called as she lazily chewed a mouthful of gum. "How you doin'?"

Isis cleared her throat. "Um, Lyev, this is Linelle. Nelly, this is the guy I was telling you about, the artist. This is Lyev."

Linelle waved and said, "You ai'ight, though. He dope, Isis. That's wassup." She gave Isis a thumbs up.

"Come again?" he said. He had no idea what she was trying to say.

Isis waved away Linelle's response. "Don't worry about it. She was just saying nice to meet you.
